Another terrific reason to go to Heroes Con! team Cul de Sac benefit Zine Debuts

Author:

due to various and sundry life choices, my first convention this year will be one of my very favorites, Heroes con in Charlotte, North Carolina, June 3-5. It’s a fantastic show, with a diverse mix of guests and things to do, but there’s one additional special reason to pay attention this year.

To benefit Richard Thompson, cartoonist of Cul de Sac and Parkinson’s disease sufferer, Craig Fischer and others have launched team Cul de Sac, a group collecting art donations for a book and auctions to raise money for the Michael J Fox foundation (MJFF), which works for Parkinson’s awareness and research.

For those of us who love comics but aren’t artists, Craig put together a zine. A whole bunch of bloggers and critics wrote about what their favorite comic is and why, and I was honored to be asked to contribute. It launches at Heroes, 40 pages for $5, and features the following:

The contributors are an all-star line-up: Derik Badman, Noah Berlatsky, Alex Boney, David Bordwell, Matthew J. Brady, Scott Bukatman, Johanna Draper Carlson, Isaac Cates, Rob Clough, Corey Creekmur, Andrew Farago, Shaenon Garrity, Dustin Harbin, Charles Hatfield, Jeet Heer, gene Kannenberg Jr., Abhay Khosla, Susan Kirtley, Sean Kleefeld, Costa Koutsoutis, Andrew Mansell, Robert Stanley Martin, Chris Mautner, Joe McCulloch, Ana Merino, Chris Pitzer, Mike Rhode, Jim Rugg, Frank Santoro, Chris Schweizer, Caroline Small, Tom Spurgeon, Ben Towle, and Matthias Wivel.

After Heroes, you’ll be able to purchase through the mail or get at other conventions. I can’t wait to see all the choices and recommendations, all for a good cause!
