one of the standout original characters debuting in Marvel’s star Wars comics came from Kieron Gillen, the space-archaeologist doctor Aphra. She’s something of an anti-hero, whose worked both with the Rebels and the Empire. In fact, she survived a contract with none other than Darth Vader himself. The marvel star Wars comic series all ended last year (in favor of new series). A new doctor Aphra comic will come in April as all the magazines shift into the time between empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. However, there may be a live-action star Wars series in production at Disney+ that will see doctor Aphra brought to life in the flesh.
If the character has been secretly cast and has a series in production, it implies that she could appear as early as season 2 of The Mandalorian. set to debut in October of 2020, it seems like the series could use an expert on galactic history. Not only does the Mandalorian know very little of the force and baby Yoda’s species, the appearance of the Darksaber also seems like a essential place for an archaeologist to help out. If she is introduced in The Mandalorian that could be the springboard to her own series following a few months later.

The report comes from Jason Ward of MakingStarWars.com, who has broken his share of star Wars scoops in the past. He told Inverse.com that the live-action doctor Aphra star Wars series for Disney+ is a joint venture between Lucasfilm and Marvel. The idea also lines up with something Bob Iger said during the most recent Disney profits call.
As he said, through The Motley trick (emphasis ours):
“On the star Wars front … we’re taking a bit of a hiatus in terms of … theatrical release. We finished the … Skywalker saga and we’re developing both television and features. The priority in the next few years is television with The Mandalorian season 2 coming in October and then much more coming from The Mandalorian thereafter, including the possibility of infusing it with much more characters and the possibility of taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series. and then we have a prequel to Rogue One and Kenobi series also in development. So the priority for star Wars in the short-term is going to be … television for Disney+ and then we will have much more to say about development of theatrical soon after that. 2020 is not going to be the same as 2019 for the studio, but we still expect a very strong year….”
This implies that Aphra could show up in The Mandalorian for an introduction, followed by a spin-off series. worth noting is that doctor Aphra is possibly the most well-known queer character in star Wars. Gillen says the he describes Aphra as a lesbian, and he’s only written her romantic interests as women. However, in the star Wars universe that’s not as big of a deal as it is in our world. people accept same-sex relationships, as they finish with inter-species relationships like that of Kanan and Hera in Star Wars: Rebels.
